On the same day that over 130 young members received awards in Croke Park for their participation in the Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative, Dermot Earley Jr. was on the sideline guiding the Irish International Rules team in their test series match against Australia.
Foróige member Liam O’Driscoll has represented us at the World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg in the last month. 57 nationalities attended the Forum; an annual gathering of leaders, civil society activists, representatives of business, academia, media, and young people too, to debate key challenges for democracies across the world.
The young historians at Riverstick Foróige Club in Cork have been actively involved in the centenary commemoration of the sinking of the Lusitania which was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1915. They attended a meeting about the history of the ship and its exploration, hosted by the Blackwater Sub Aqua Search and Rescue team and were then presented with an original piece of the hull of the ship!
A group of Donegal teenagers have been named European Young Entrepreneurs of the Year 2015 at a ceremony in Budapest.
Mary Kate Carr (15), Aimée Byrne (16), Rebecca McShane (16) and Ronan O’Hare (15) from Glencolmcille in Donegal won the award for their business 'Milseog na Mara’, meaning Desserts of the Sea, which offers healthy alternatives to jellies and chocolate mousse using a type of locally sourced seaweed – Carrageen Moss – as the main ingredient.
Male and female volunteers are being sought in locations around Ireland for the Foróige Big Brother Big Sister Youth Mentoring Programme. Volunteers spend 1 to 2 hours per week with vulnerable boys and girls. Big Brother Big Sister is an internationally recognised youth mentoring programme that forms supportive friendships for young people, inspiring them to brighter futures. The locations are as follows:
Mayo: Ballina, Castlebar, Westport, Claremorris, Ballinrobe, Louisburgh
Sligo: Town and surrounding areas
Young people from the Foróige Nenagh Youth Project have taken part in an event to mark EU Code Week. The 'Mega Dojo' was held by CoderDojo Mid West and hosted by LIT, with an attendance of over 750 young people. The ten young people from Foróige in Nenagh got involved in a “hackathon” at the event.
