REAL U

Foróige’s Relationships and Sexuality Programme

Foróige’s REAL U (Relationships Explored and Life Uncovered) programme is a comprehensive and holistic approach to relationships and sexuality education (RSE) for young people aged 12-18. First developed in 2012, REAL U is continuously updated to ensure the programme continues to meet the needs of young people in an ever changing and developing society.

The programme covers essential areas such as:

  • Building healthy, positive relationships
  • Boundaries and consent
  • Puberty and hygiene
  • Body image
  • Gender and sexuality
  • Reproduction
  • Contraception and protection
  • STIs and HIV
  • Mental health and stress management

Designed to be non-formal and discussion-based, REAL U allows young people to ask questions, gain accurate information, and develop the skills to make informed choices about their relationships and personal well-being.

The REAL U Programme is being used in a wide range of practices nationwide including: youth work setting, school completion programme, residential care, alternative education centres, post-primary schools and within the adult intellectual disability sector too.

To ensure the programme remains up to date and evidence-based, Foróige collaborates with a range of expert organisations, including:

  • HSE Sexual Health Programme
  • The Marie Keating Foundation
  • Rape Crisis Network Ireland
  • HIV Ireland
  • Belong To Youth Services
  • Dublin Rape Crisis Centre
  • UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre, University of Galway
