Danesfort Parish man John Sullivan was honoured by a large gathering at a surprise 80th Birthday Party in the Springhill Court Hotel on Friday night, January 18th.

John has been a volunteer with Cuffesgrange Foróige Club since 1964 and to thank him for his work, the leaders and members of the Foróige Club organised a surprise party for his 80th Birthday.

Keeping the party a secret was difficult as John is involved in over thirteen committees and groups throughout the parish and beyond. These include Kilkenny Foróige District Council, Cuffesgrange Foróige, Danesfort Parish and GAA Lotto, Danefort Community Hall Bingo, Danesfort Field Day, Board of Management of Fr. Campion Place, Board of Management of Churchhill N.S, Cuffesgrange Cemetery Committee, DCK Men’s Shed, Danesfort Parish Pastoral Committee and Danesfort Community Hall Committee.

On the night a number of his volunteer friends from his lifelong commitment to Foróige travelled from near and far to wish him a happy birthday and a number of presentations were made to John. Current Foróige youth members presented John with a plaque which they made for the occasion with the following inscription  “Your Kindness and never ending willingness to volunteer and help people in our community is greatly appreciated. You are an inspiration to us all”. While Volunteer Development Manager Denis O'Brien presented John with a 9ct gold pin and a personalised Foróige Jacket for the cold nights in Seven Houses Hall when Foróige meets.

There is no one in the Danesfort-Cuffesgrange area who has not come across or been assisted by John over the years and he is treasured by his Foróige family across the country.
