Seventeen-year-old student Rebecca Staunton from Westport, Co. Mayo is currently doing the Leadership for Life programme. As part of her community action project for module 3, she launched a fundraising campaign for two local charities. She chose to raise funds by chopping off her ponytail!
Her initial aim was to raise €600 however, her campaign on Facebook has received donations from 71 people and generated over €2000 for her chosen charities. The big chop happened on Friday 30th of April.
Rebecca says ‘I chose to do this project as I could help two very worthy causes - The Little Princess Trust and Mayo Roscommon Hospice. In particular, the work of the Hospice can be clearly seen in the community. The service they provide is essential and has touched the lives of so many people within the community, including me and my family. On account of Covid, their fundraising has been very limited and I wanted to do whatever I could to help’.
COMMUNITY ACTION IN CO.MAYO
Rebecca’s fundraiser has made local news with an article about her appearing in the Connacht Telegraph. You can read that Mayo Telegraph article here.
Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation meets the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families living with life-threatening illnesses . The Service enables patients to live out the remainder of their lives in comfort and dignity. The Palliative Care Service is provided free of charge to all.
The Little Princess Trust provides free real hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.
We would like to congratulate Rebecca; for choosing two extremely worthy causes, for running a wonderful fundraiser, for donating her ponytail, and for providing vital funds to an essential service in her community.
