Foundation Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action
In 2010, the National University of Ireland, Galway, accredited Foróige’s leadership programme as a Foundation Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action. This provides young people with the opportunity to expand on their learning and acquire a university qualification by completing all three modules of the programme. The Foundation Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action merits 15 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits at Level 6 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.
What’s needed for accreditation?
Participants must complete all three modules of the Leadership for Life course.
Module 1: 15 hours of taught content & 15 hours independent study in the form of personal reflection. Completion of presentation and workbook.
Module 2: 15 hours taught & 15 hours independent study in the form of a group project and personal reflection. Completion of group project and workbook.
Module 3: 20 hours independent community action project & 10 hours group and individual reflection, completion of portfolio.
To gain certification participants must:
Have completed module one and two of the programme in their projects, clubs or at the Foróige Leadership for Life Conference.
Complete module three of the programme.
Be 16 year old on completion of certificate.
Be resident in Ireland. At present, accreditation is only available to participants who are resident in Ireland.
Grading and Assessment
Grading is completed by facilitators. Training and guidance is provided to facilitators on the grading process. The grades and pass marks for each module are outlined below:
Module 1 30 points Attendance / 35 points Workbook / 35 points Presentation / Total 100 points. 40% pass mark.
Module 2 30 points Attendance / 35 points Workbook / 35 points Team Project / Total 100 points. 40% pass mark.
Module 3 30 points Completion of 20 hours community action project / 35 points Reflection Journal / 35 points Portfolio / Total 100 points. 40% pass mark.
A pass mark of at least 40% on all three modules is needed for completion.
Prof. Pat Dolan from NUIG is the Academic Director of the course, and will review the results from a sample of applicants to ensure quality.
Registration and Cost
Participants register through NUI Galway. For more information on registration please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. The cost of the course is €300, payable through Foróige.
All work must be submitted and graded by the end of June (Modules 1 & 2 by end of May) each year for October graduation.
Although the programme is designed to be undertaken over one extended academic year, participants may take longer to complete the certificate.
