€132 a year supports a Foróige Club, providing a safe place for young people to hang out, meet new friends and have a voice. Club members elect a committee giving them a chance to experience democracy first hand. They develop planning, negotiating skills and work with others. They think about responding to their community and its needs. And they have fun! They’re supported by adult Leaders and each Club is supported by a professional youth officer who provides training and ongoing support.
The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) is Foróige’s programme to develop young people’s confidence, business skills, ambition and vision for the future. Over 3,500 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds have participated since NFTE came to Ireland in 2004. Results show improved confidence and higher rates of secondary school completion and going on to third level study.
Double your donation!! Every Euro you donate to NFTE in 2011 will be matched, Euro for Euro by the One Foundation. www.nfte.ie
A Youth Café is a space for young people to hang out with their friends in a safe and secure environment. In 2010 almost 3,000 young people did just that. Young people take ownership of the Café by electing a committee who work with the members, volunteers and staff. They organise social or cultural activities, participate in citizenship, leadership or other Foróige programmes. Crucially, young people can access personal support from trained staff at the Cafe if they need it to address challenges they may face such as bullying, mental health, sexuality and relationships.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ireland (BBBS) is an international proven youth mentoring programme offered by Foróige in Ireland since 2002. The programme matches young people to adult volunteers who provide mentoring support, guidance and encouragement to assist them in their school, family, and community lives. BBBS works to help young people raise their expectations in life and fulfil their unique potential, in the face of adversity. BBBS has proven to be effective at improving school retention and academic performance, and addressing the issue of bullying in schools.
