Minister Frances Fitzgerald, who was guest of honour the 41st Annual Foróige Leaders Conference on 9th April in Kilkenny, was greeted with loud applause as she announced the addition of youth affairs to her ministerial title. The announcement that the Minister will henceforth be known as the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs marks the strong commitment of Government to Ireland’s young people, who will finally have their voice heard at the cabinet table.
Minister Fitzgerald said she is looking forward to working with Foróige and utilising the organisations’ 60 years of expertise on the front line of youth work. Foróige wholeheartedly welcomes the addition of youth work to the Department title and looks forward to working with the Minister over the coming months to ensure the best possible outcomes for Ireland’s young people.
Mairi McMahon, Chairperson of the National Council of Foróige, thanked the Minister for taking the time to join Foróige volunteers and staff at this annual conference. She says, “It was a great pleasure to have Minister Fitzgerald with us as we celebrated volunteerism, positive community action and the great possibilities of Ireland’s young people. We are thrilled with the addition of Youth Affairs to her Ministerial title. It sends a positive message to the youth sector and it is an honour that the Minister chose one of the most significant events in Foróige’s calendar year to make the official announcement. This is great news for the youth sector and for the young people of Ireland.”
